Teacher's Child

In consideration with the holiday season and to prevent further nosebleed (Hehehe), hope you all enjoy this post!
Kudos to Prof. Jan Argy Tolentino who was recently elected as Vice President to the IFLRY in a historical manner and from whom this post originated!
Happy Holidays!!!!
“There is a difference between education and experience. Education is what you get from reading the small print. Experience is what you get from not reading it!"

But isn’t it true that great learning comes from both education and experience? Let me tell you a parable:
A young school teacher had a dream that an angel appeared to him and said, “You will be given a child who will grow up to become a world leader. How will you prepare the child so that he/she will realize his/her intelligence, grow in confidence, develop both assertiveness and sensitivity, open-mindedness, yet strong in character? In short, what kind of education will you provide that child can become one of the world’s truly GREAT leaders?”

The young teacher awoke in a cold sweat. It had never occurred to him before—any ONE of his present or future students could be the person described in his dream. Was he preparing them to rise to ANY POSITION to which they may aspire? He thought, ‘How might my teaching change if I KNEW that one of my students were this person?’ He gradually began to formulate a plan in his mind.

This student would need experience as well as instruction. That student would need to know how to solve problems of various kinds. That child would need to grow in character as well as knowledge. The child would need self-assurance as well as the ability to listen well and work with others. He or she would need to understand and appreciate the past, yet feel optimistic about the future. The student would need to know the value of lifelong learning in order to keep a curious and active mind. He or she would need to grow in understanding of others and become a student of the spirit. That child would need to set high standards for himself/herself and learn self discipline, yet would also need love and encouragement, that he or she might be filled with love and goodness.

His teaching changed. Every young person who walked through his classroom became, for him, a future world leader. He saw each one, not as they were, but as they could be. He expected the best from his students, yet tempered it with compassion. He taught each one as if the future of the world depended on his instruction. After many years, a woman he knew rose to a position of world prominence. He realized that she must surely have been the girl described in his dream. Only she was not one of his students, but rather his daughter. For of all the various teachers in her life, her father was the best.

I’ve heard it said that “Children are living messages we send to a time and place we will never see.” But this isn’t simply a parable about an unnamed school teacher. It is a parable about you and me — whether or not we are parents or even teachers. And the story, OUR story, actually begins like this:“You will be given a child who will grow up to become….” You finish the sentence. If not a world leader, then a superb father? An excellent teacher? A gifted healer? An innovative problem solver? An inspiring artist? A generous philanthropist?

Where and how you will encounter this child is a mystery. But believe that one child’s future may depend upon influence only you can provide, and something remarkable will happen. For no young person will ever be ordinary to you again. And you will never be the same.

hmmmm...... what you posted is filled with heavy thoughts.... it is true that we should act and think about not only our future but about the future of our would be kids... what doctor jose rizal said about the youth are the future of our nation is not completely true... the youth and our guidance would be the future of our nation

as i was reading the blog, images of my professors just appeared in my mind. i have learned a lesson, that all of us makes marks in the lives of everyone. whether we have helped an old lady crossing the street, or maybe helping a bullied kid, or maybe.. just being ourselves... Chad (i don't know the last name.. Haha..) of Pinoy Dream Academy said, "We all make history" and these is indeed true. Each one of us has a reason of our existence. We are a person's hero. And we have our own heroes. Someone or maybe not only one made us change ourselves(for the better i hope) and we make someone change.
It may also occur that I, myself is these child(i'm not bragging but these might happen even in dreams, right?). I, myself can bring change, that I can be a great leader somewhere in the future. How? Through the help of my professors(including you, sir! THough you make me nervous every Saturday..),my parents, my friends, and everyone I meet. "Do a Good Turn Daily", who knows? The person you are helping might be these child!

Merry Christmas to all and a Prosperous New Year!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!!!!

all i can say is,, we can learn from both education and experience. we would be unable all our thoughts from the basic education system being thought by our teachers without even knowing what would that be in reality. For me, you can learn more from experiences. Education is a fixed idea. There are people who are not that educated but still they manage to survive,,why?? be cause they know on how to dance in the music of life which is the most important for me. You can't use those stuff from school everyday. It's not based on what u've learn in school but rather on how you survive on all the unpredictable things that can happen in the future..

Well, until now i feel the uncommon sensation of each messages that the article wants me to be noticed..I think i was shut by a missile then crush my bones and awaken the restless emotion within me. This article would the best of all articles I've ever read..the best ever!! I never expect the great impact that was given by each words that passed into my eyes, each of them giving me a very light perception as a person and of course as a student that also dreaming to be one of the best person not only in our country.

This article let me reminisce the moments of my dear lost childhood days..as i remember my past, it let me remind myself of such greatest lessons about having right education and for gaining unforgettable experience that let you know the true meaning of life and intelligence. I am proud to say that maybe someday i would be the person that i expected to become, I would be a person that maybe so called " the hope and a hero of our generation". But then as i behold my situation i can say that there will still o lot of possibilities that might happen, maybe this time, later and for then next and so on. But I am willing to face it all, i am willing to learn more and experience such things that will guide me to know the reality of being human.

education can give you a profession but experience can give you a character that can stregnthen your position in your profetion.

experience can't learn from books or theories that our professors thougth us. Experiences are our teacher that will provide us lessons that we can us in our practical life.

there is a saying that a good theacher can provide our society good citizens. for me, it is not what the teacher thougth us in his subject but the character that can left by him in our minds that teach us not only, how to deal to his subject but how to deal in life.

For me, you cant learn without education and you cant survive without experience.

for the teachers, dont only think that you are there just to produse profetionals or great leaders, you are also there to produse good cityzens that fear of good and will also be the future of this looming society

Always we are all teachers, that will teach life to the future of our society,

tandaan ang kasabihan, "Teachers will always be the Society's Parents.

..that teacher deserves a raise..
the angel said that 'he will be given a child who will become a future leader'..if i would be in his case, i would focus more on what the angel said.."child"..i would think on ways on how to make my child have those characteristics of becoming a future leader..it is me being selfish..it was my initial reaction upon reading the first part of the post(i think, it was just normal because i don't posses a teacher's heart)

but that post made me realize the greatness of the teachers..
it made me wonder..it made me have a better perception on teachers..

Way back in my childhood days, i have learned from them that 'The school serves as our 2nd house and the teacher serves as our 2nd parents'..well, i do believe in this in the sense that i go to school&meet my teachers everyday..
but upon reading this post..i have learned the essence of that saying..

that teacher made me realize that they really care for their students and they treat us as their second children..it was great that he taught every person in the room believing that one of them will make the dream come true..this dream made him a more effective teacher..
i admire this teacher because he has this heart for his profession..

The only constant thing in this world is change..time moulds every person in this world..

as time pass, we will learn many things..and these things might be the ones that will lead us to success..for me..the message of this post is "not to take for granted all the lessons you've learned..it's all worth it"

A message not only for teachers, for parents, for adults but also for children, for students like me has been finally spoken. This message intends to inspire the people around a children, or even the children themselves, to be the best they can be in order to have changes in the community.
I remember the quote in our classroom when I was in high school, “What’s the difference between school and life? School is where lessons are learned and then you are given a test, while in life you are, first, given a test before you learned a lesson.” See the difference?
As I have finished reading this, I started criticizing the teachers I have encountered since I entered schooling. Some of them may not be the best in terms of quality yet I’ve learned to them how to care for my future if they kept doing that, some of them are the best in a way that I have learned many things from them and up until now I can still remember, and some of them are very opinionated, being practical (that’s what they say) which gives me an idea what reality is. Because of this message, I have put up a standard of a great teacher. I have a lot of respect to all of my teachers, firstly because they help me in all aspects not only in studies but also with my personal problems. They enlightened me. I truly believe that teachers should see their students what would they be and not what were they. I acknowledge the great things a teacher and adults had given me and I’m still hoping for more.
As to the successor of the future and as students as well, we should be the best of what we are. Best to give honor for those who have taught us, best, for ourselves, best for our future and best for our nation’s future. We may not be the best today, but in years we will be the greatest.

Children is our future. And to be able for them to achieve their goal and change our society. We must help them especially those who will shape them to become what they would be someday. but who are those people who will care for them? there are parents who look for them ever since and then the teachers who act as second parents but we must not forget the society who greatly influence them.

Ever parents wish that their child will be proffesionals someday. A doctor, a lawyer or an engineer. They just wanted the best for their children. And to acvhieve what they wanted they sent their children at school. This is where the children learn something they will not learn at their home. The teacher is the person who are responsible for them.To teach them everything written in the book. On their hands depend our future. And the society will teach the things will never be thought at schools. Those learnings maybe bad or good and our children must know what are the things they must acquire to be successful.

Each of us have dream to be succesful someday but we must not forget that the future depend on us with the help of those people who care for the future.

wow. what an inspiring post..

It's nice to see that as of this moment(i refer to the time i posted my comment) the majority of the the comments to this post came from my bLockmates.

I like this one. Say it's one of those that comes in a small package(meaning short in terms of lenght) yet worth reverbing.

With this, I remember my 4th year teacher back in my highschool days. She was my mathematics sensei then. She's great in her chosen profession. And she made the subject look quite easy to her students.

Here's the... i dunno if funny thing on this one. An anecdote perhaps..

Note, she's cracking jokes to us which sometimes we felt that were humiliated and or what but we know she had her reasons on putting those words on our face.

See, she had this words..

"I won't give you failing grades though I know most of you deserve it. 'Coz, who might know, one day, one of you will be our future legislators... and have a seat in the house of representative or in the senate or be the education secretary... Isn't it a shame that when you look back in your records, you see failing grades transcript? Just remember me and this favor. A bill to increase our salary to be passed in both houses and I were even."

I know she had a ground for saying that insult to us. If it was intended to be like that. But I have a different understanding on why she give us that sort of compliment.

This one kick of experience and education Mrs. Martinez gave us put me here. Not to give her favor back but as to let these pieces of reality seen by the society. And little be little give o dose of medication to this illness.

The best teacher we’ll ever have is our parents. They really are the one’s who teaches us a lot of things. They really influence us a lot. They are the one’s we can run to whenever we have difficulties and they can never turn us down, for they only want us to be successful in life.

We also learned from our surroundings, our school teachers, our friends, and even from our own experiences. These factors really helped a lot to mold us to become who we really are, to discover the real us.

In this case we don’t just discover ourselves but we also help to discover someone’s well being. We’re not just here to be educated but to share what we have as well.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Experience is the best teacher-well i agree that it was right, but we also can learn through different things and activities just like by reading, going to school, talk to other people and most of all, listening to our parents.

The parabole was just a very nice post and we can learn and reflect a lot of things from it. Well, yeah maybe learning didnt just stop inside our classroom, and probably we can learn more outside, but what we just need to do is always listen to someone else's advice. Be a better person that we can ever be. Learn from others experience too and develop the best ability we have, and of course, share what we've experienced and teach it to our children, because we can develop the best child, if we know how to be the best teacher. Learning never stops, coz everything around us, influenced us to become the best person we could ever be!! (yeah, peace out!).

(and by the way, if i were to ask about my child:“You will be given a child who will grow up to become….” I want my child to grow up and become the most famous and the hottest artist in the world. To become the next Angelina Jolie!! yeah, so kind-hearted, a philanthropist, rich, talented and sooo hottt!!)

No one really knows how much teachers can influence their students and how far they can go beyond. But not every teachers can give you both education and experience, sometimes though you are learning from school you get some education from other things or from other person, and sometimes teachers can give you the best lesson and experience of a lifetime (like in "tuesdays with morrie").

This leads me to a conclusion, that teachers and every adults are responsible for whatever the future holds and it is to us, as a student should take this in our heart to give a better future to all. (By just typing this comment I remembered the movie, "Pay it forward" (I hope you've watched it sir because it's a beautiful movie)).

When i first read the title, Teacher's Child, two things come in my mind. First, it refers to the student of teacher. Second, is the child of a teacher. Students don't learn only with the people around them, they learn also through experience and if they want to learn.

gud_pm sir... :)

We may not have taken the course BSEducation, but we are all teachers, in our own ways. Or should I appropriately say: student-teachers.

We will always be students, because education does not only stop in school and in a piece of paper we received during the graduation rites-—-it still continues after we step out of school, but in a much higher level of learning things. We may have finished English, Math, or Science in formal schooling, but the values we have acquired will go on until we meet our final time on earth. So, it is as vital to value the principles we’ve learned in our daily experiences. We need to at least learn a lesson everyday for us to know deeper ourselves and identify fully our abilities and capabilities. We always need to study our purpose in life, and how we can use this purpose to pass it on to others...

...because at the same time, we are teachers who need to instruct others someday. We are all being evaluated by how far we could affect other peoples’ lives by our own lessons in life. In order for us to impart the right education, we first must have it. We are responsible for the people following us. We are becoming the leaders now, and we need to be reliable to the people we are influencing.

Education should never be concentrated only in books. We must never be contented only to be intellectually-competent. Rather, we should also give equal significance to our values as a person that will make us physically/spiritually/socially/
emotionally/morally---competent. Education is a balanced-learning affair that we need to treasure and live on.

Merry Christmas sir!!! :)

well,, for me for us to achieve this goal, to have a best teacher and a best student it must be a hand in hand effort for the two most involved individuals...
if only every teachers/parents would have this in mind, i believe he will be a great influence to every students' life as well as if only every students have also bear this in mind, surely our national hero passage will ultimately come true...

i believe teachers should have the first step in achieving this.. why?
because i personally get my motivations to learn, to educate myself from those professors-the authorities in the university. from the inspiring words they conveyed i then have this drive to finish my study...thats why they should watch those words coming out from their lips because if the message was interpreted negatively to what it should be-then the students might be confused....

but then, its the duty of the students to whether absorb parts of it, digest it thoroughly or totally
disregard it...

thus, being a teacher is the best profession in this world...

(these comment is based on my ideology, we are free to express our own ideas!)
we should always consider them: past, future and present so that we could learn form the past, work for the present and prepare for the future. but it seems to me that we worry too much on what today will become rather than what will the future will be.

i'll set the elections fo example. when people are bribed for their vote, let's say that they're given php10,000 for their vote. what is php10,000 to the millions of pesos such politicians "will" rob our country? ryt? i guess we Filipinos are too afraid of the present than the future.

for me, we should use the present to prepare for the future and use the experience and education we got from the past to guide us for the present and the future!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

Honestly speaking, you’re right. This post is so enjoying. Come to realize the simple difference of learning via experience or by reading. Yes, experience is the best teacher but not in all cases. We can learn from others not just by merely listening to them (but it can help) because you can’t learn everything by experience. Finishing the sentence: You will be given a child who will grow up to become…. “someone who’s living his life the best that he can be”. Learning doesn’t starts or stops in home either in school. It starts inside your self and ends in time that no one knows. You’re the teacher of your self. Of course parents always tells us what to do(their influence) but you are the one who’s deciding if you want to obey them.

p.s. i wonder why until now there's no another blog posted yet..is this the post for the whole holidays??(just wondering...)

yes, it is right that education and experience are compatible because if your educating yourself and your not applying it outside the classroom, you cannot use what you have learned inside the classroom.

Good day sir.. About your post, it's really great, very enlightening. Especially for us students where experience and education is an everyday thing. Experience and education are different from each other but they produce the same thing for us, great learning. We have a lot to learn in school, but we also have a lot to learn based on experience. Using what you have learned in experience to studying in school and vise versa, well i think it works very well.

About sa line na "Chidren are living messages we send to a time and place we will never see", i agree with you sir that one child's future may depend upon influence only you can provide. Pero syempre sabi nga "Huli man at magaling maihahabol din", if the parents will pursue to hook they child to a bright future, there will be still hope for the child.

That's all Sir!! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

In different ways. Vice versa lang 'yung dalawang 'yun, eh. Kapag naeeducate ka, it's an experience. From an experience, naeeducate ka.

In short, 'yung parang barkada, may connection...hehe.

(I'm trying to connect 'yung experience-teacher-education...hehe)

You can't take away education from experience to have great learning..

Experience builds your emotions and learnings about the reality..

Education gives you idea on how reality looks like..

That's just based on my opinion..
Your character won't be complete on education only.. Anyway this article have some relation on the movie "Good Will Hunting".. Whatever.. =P

Advance Happy New Year Sir.. =)

I will be given a child who will become...someone who will be happy and professional in his/her chosen field. In my almost fourteen years of schooling, I have encountered different teachers. They have different methods of teaching and at some point I can't catch up with their methods, but I never blame them for the low grades I received, indeed I blame nmyself because i know that my teacher gives her best and the fault is mine, maybe I didn't really pay attention. That is why I hate teachers who just enter theclassroom, check the attendace, give an assignment and leaves the class. Maybe this article is a good thing for teachers to read so that they will realize something..that they will part be a part of a successful/failure citizen. I am not giving the loads just to the teachers, it is still the students perrogative to study or not but teachers can really help. Someday we will be parents, and as parents, we will do anything just for our child to be successful and remember that we will be their first teachers. Whatever our child be when he/she grows up is the product of something that he/she absorbs when he/she is still a child. So it is a challenge for every citizens to be a part of someone.

Pxencia n po sir ngayon lang nakapag-post.

I think that the article has a more profound meaning. And I appreciate it because it makes me realize some things. I think that education and experience are both important. I believe that there are some things to be known within the university premises. But some are better known or are better understood through experiences. Education and experience are not quite the same. But I believe that both are important to the life of a certain individual.

I would like to relate the article to one of the present issues happening in our society. It is about some teachers who are not teaching well. According to the parable, the man can only produce the best student if he will plan every detail on how to achieve it. And some of it is cited in the article. But it is the opposite of what is happening today. Some teachers don’t care if their students are learning or what. The tendency is that students are not that well informed about their subjects. And it is such a moving scenario since those children are the ones who are going to lead the future generation.

Regarding the child that I would have in the future, I think that I can also mold or change other people’s lives. I would do my best to share what I have with the people around me. I would like to mold them into better individuals. All I can say is that, the article is worth reading.

as i was reading this entry, an image of my former teacher in english IV just appeared in my mind..

she's unique, unique in a way na nagturo ng kakaiba sa amin.

she taught us to be US.. she treated us like her own, something other can't just treat us like that..

weird, medyo weird sya.. she accepts us in our worst, and we show her what we've got.

she's not our advisory teacher but she treated us like her advisory class..

she's our heroine.. the wackiest teacher mrs. irene canon..

awts... i really miss her.. thanks for this post sir!!

kudos!

..gud day sir! happy new year po..

sir!

sorry for the late comment..hehe (pasaway aku) for me it's such a wonderful story...and i can say that it happens in real life...teacher is not only a teacher,we, as a student should treat teachers as our parent who would guide as to become a better person in the near future, who is concern about us...we should respect them and learn from their teachings and so they (teachers) should treat students as possible leaders or rulers of this land....teachers should put trust on their students that someday, their lives would be better or what they teach would help their students in the near future....wow astig talaga...how i wish ganyan lahat ng prof para masaya....

for me it depends on the person-,
his expriences, and environment.,-
the way he was brougth up by his guardians.., for him to be able to succed..,
but exprience is the best teacher.., well not always you have to exprience something before you learn..,

Education and experience is for me, actually, is linked together. Because education brings out experiences, and experiences, in one way or another, is one of the brackets of education that everyone has to have.

We all have the ability to influence, to create an impact, to make a difference, or to pave a way for change. And we are given "free wills" to decide whether we drive that ability towards the best, or to worst. So as individuals with sound minds and analytical thinking, our mindset should be focused on bringing out the best for ourselves, and for all the people we love and treasure a lot. Being a teacher or instructor does not only mean that you got to finish a bachelor's degree, or to collect M.A.s and PH.D.s. We can be teacher in our own, different way. We can inspire someone by our simple, yet, remarkable acts. We may have spent our time here on earth without hearing our names be aired in televisions and radios, but we can inspire people's hearts, or we can drive them towards the pedestal, by simply doing what we know that is good for us and for everybody else in this world.

This post actually encouraged me to do all things at the best of my ability. Because we might be awar or not, that people around us will be a witness of everything we do. And with what we do, they'll be influenced, and that influence will be carried until the near future.

yes.. its true that learning comes from both education and experience..
but i believe that we learn from this two( education and experience) in different weight.. because it is often easier for us to learn more from our experience than with those things taught in the four corner of the classroom..

nice one sir...
from this post, i hope u can be one of those teachers who could influence us to become a future leader..

happy new year po!!

what an inspiring story!
. . after reading it, i remember the reply of mr.koreanong kalahati a textmate of mine when i asked him if he is studying. he said that he has no plan to pursue his study in college because for him he is enjoying working than to study, for the reason that he gained more experience mingling to different people. of course, i dissent to his view ( coz i think i'm studying ) because for me you will be competitive enough if you graduated in highest degree. but, that's point of mine changed.

..no one knows if who will be the next-someone in this playful world. we may never know if the little boy the begging for alms will be a business tycoon or even a president! we will not know if us as a simple individual will gradually bring an impact change to each other, we don't need to be a teacher or to be a professional just to play a role of someone that can/will mould a innocent child. each of us has a responsibility of bringing the best to each other and be a good influence. we can be the best teacher whether our teachings come in print or lessons that we learned in life.

. . and if i'll fill the sentence it will be like this..
:“You will be given a child who will grow up to become the best person for him/herself. a child that enjoys his/her living..”

. .that's all folks..!!

Everyone of us learns in some ways differently from the people around us. They say that the greatness of a teacher is in the caliber of his students. Our parents if not the best teacher is the most influencial of all people whom we have imparted knowledge from. We as their child is the mirror of their dreams and their frustrations.

the post is great... and i think we should really think big in a sense that how we figure out what would we be like 4 years from now..
i think teachers are our life advisers they make us what we want to be and what we ought to be. we are taughtto face the real world and apply all the things that we have done in our childhood days, till our first work day and it really makes sense...

True enough, a teacher will never know the extent of his/her influence. I know a lot of people who would always be thankful for things like a word of encouragement once heard from their kindergarten teacher; a challenge posed by a professor; an exam aced because of admiration for the person who taught you well. These are some of athe moments we'll all remember and will keep us going throughout our lives.
It is equally true to say that experience is the best teacher. There are a lot of things that cannot be taught inside the 4 walls of the classroom. Even mundane things in our everyday lives, such as having crushes, returning things to its proper place, knowing when to say sorry to a playmate, knowing that playing with matches will hurt and other things we encounter as we grow up.
These 2 combined is what makes a great and complete education. It is a nice thing to notice that in most speeches of successful people, they share a thing or two abour something that happened in their lives that eventually became a turning point in their journey. But, as for me, and I think what the article wants to say is that being successful or being part of a success story is also about seeing that unique something in everyone; always having fascination for what others can do as well; that everyone is special in their own way, and one is successful if he/she can say that as she was learning her abc's, she learned about the ups and downs of life in the process.
