THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN

Politics in the Philippines is mind blogging and really not for the faint of heart.... below are some reflections that may provide us another perspective on the Jun Lozada expose.

Political Tidbits: QUESTIONS for LOZADA, LACSON et.al.
By Belinda Olivares-Cunanan

There are those who believe, after closely following the recent hearings in the Senate on the ZTE national broadband network (NBN) controversy, that there was extensive manipulation by a group of opposition leaders of chief witness Rodolfo Noel Lozada Jr. in order to bring down the government.

To these observers, his recent testimony tended to show that Lozada was not a victim of what he claims to be a kidnapping by government authorities but, on the contrary, that there was a grand design of opposition leaders, led by Senators Panfilo Lacson and Jamby Madrigal, to set up the authorities who, perhaps out of naiveté or eagerness to help the President, fell for the trap. To these observers, it was a typical Lacson maneuver, smooth and scheming, with all the angles covered.

Part of Lozada’s credibility stems from his looking helpless and guileless, a victim of persecution by the Arroyo administration for "telling the truth." But to keen observers, that impression was being blown bit by bit in the past few days, as it began to appear that he was a part of a grand design to overthrow the government and hoodwink the nation -- even as he kept seeking help from government officials for his security and financial wellbeing at the same time.

It was Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Lito Atienza who first raised in the Senate this possibility of a grand design and hinted that Lacson was the manipulator. When I heard Atienza, I began to closely follow this argument and I must say that I tend to agree.

For instance, Bro. Felipe Belleza, president of La Salle Greenhills, testified that Lozada and his family had been talking to him since early January about seeking refuge in the school. When Lozada disembarked from the plane from Hong Kong, he claimed that he was held against his will, but later in the evening he asked to be brought to La Salle and the police were surprised to see his family already there.

And yet, in the early morning of Feb. 6, as Police Senior Supt. Paul Mascariñas pointed out, even though Lozada was already with his family in the evening of Feb. 5, his wife still filed writs of habeas corpus and amparo (which the Court of Appeals threw out later). Part of the grand design to make the kidnap/cover-up angle more believable?

Lacson has a lot to explain not just to the people but to his colleagues as well. As Atienza pointed out, how come he knew ahead of everyone that Lozada was resigning, that he was not going to London but to Hong Kong, and that he was arriving on Feb. 5? And how come he was at the airport that afternoon with his men, apparently seeking to preempt the Senate sergeant-at-arms who was sent by the chamber to fetch Lozada? Did Lacson plan to brief the witness first? He said later that he was simply being enterprising. Or is it because he was manipulating the witness all along, since December, when Lozada and Romulo Neri met with Lacson and Madrigal and the latter tried to get them to turn against the government.

By their own admission, Lacson and Madrigal tried to entice Neri to jump to their side by offering to raise a "patriotic fund" of P20 million that would enable him to live comfortably if he should resign from government. Isn't this bribery? Neri, to his credit, turned that big amount down despite initial temptation to accept it (about a year after supposedly turning down Commission on Elections Chair Benjamin Abalos' promised P200 million).
The question being raised now is: If there was a "patriotic fund" for Neri, there must have been one for Lozada, to enable him to maintain his lifestyle as a high roller and one perpetually preoccupied with money (he asked the Senate to pay for what he spent in Hong Kong). How much was Lozada's "patriotic fund"? Then too, how come he disclosed only now the P500,000 that Deputy Executive Secretary Manuel Gaite "lent" him as spending money in Hong Kong?

difinitely right.

when i heard the hearing at the senate through the media, and learned that they (sen. ping, sen. jamby, j.lo, neri, etc.) had a private meeting, which i dont know the agenda for that meeting, and that the star witness didn't stated what was that meeting for, i had already felt that something is wrong with what is happening.

'twas like, someone and somebody manipulates the issue.

that someone is behind of all those statements,

arranged

prepared

planned.

at some points with the testification of j.lo at the senate, when he was being asked by sen. ping bout their private meeting, at first he was hesitant to answer the questions.
his alibi was, he dont want a libel case.

very illogical, right?

a not suitable cover up.

now, people, it is up to us whether to believe or not.

many diversionary tactic are being made by the present administration to cover up the zte issue. After lozada show up,what can we expect there will be issues on lozada to decrease his credibility.

what i'm thinking right now is whenever someone is brave enough to stand-up for truth he/she will be criticize and his/her credibility will be questioned. but this kind of issue can never be put aside, we can never say that this one is not manipulated. we can say that this issue is just one way to stir-up peoples mind, but we can also say that this one might be true. what we all have right now are just speculations of what is really goin' on behind our government, we can't be so sure of everything we heard from the media or from anyone.

uhmm....

all i can say for that article is that it confused me specifically to the credibilitty of all the statement of Mr. Lozada but as ussual, i can say that this issue regarding to the participation of Honorable Ping Lacson to this all plot of manipulation to oust gloria arroyo as what they call it is just only theory and perhaps another kind of black propaganda to destroy the credibility not only Lozada's but ofcourse lacson's. but we can't say! maybe there is a glimpse of truth to all this accusation.

if all this accusation against to lozada and lacson was true, disappointment is what my first impression but if all of this is just a nonsense conclusion about what lozada testified about the meeting with two senators and neri, uhmm...
all i can say that all this libelous conclusion will lead to a bad concequences for the people who are behind this kind of propaganda.

for lozada, if you are saying that the truth is saving you from your enemy, and you are in that side, tell all the truth even if, it will lead you to discrimination, coz it is only way for you to help this nation in get off of the shadow of this regime's coruption. but if you are manipulated like a puppet of those who want to gain power stop it now, coz you are just making us fool.

and for the people behind all of this accusation, if you are really telling the pls. give us your evidences, for us people perhaps wiegh your evidences and lozada's statement to come up to a conclusion. but if it is only one of your dirty trix to destroy lozada. stop it now, coz you are just giving us more reason to believe to lozada's statement.

and for the people, i know we are eager to oust gloria, but as i always say before you will join or not join this mobilisation, remember that before we decide we must weigh all the happenings in our society, coz a wrong move will lead us to another set of government officials who are corrupt or stay to a corrupt government again.

so before we believe to all of this issue whether to lozada's side or to those people who concluded that there is manipulation to all the statement of lozada, pls. use your mind to judge and not your emotion.

sabi ko nasa inyo eh,mahaba-haba pa ang lalakbayin ng kwentong ito. wala pa tayo sa climax nito......

This issue have gone far..from the main issue of Zte to different branches of things.tactics are very much important in things like this. We do not really know who are the perpetrator but one thing is for sure..that we, the Filipino people are the victims. We should not expect that truth lies with Lozada,we are not sure of this scheme. We will never know, after months or so..this issue will just die without certain clarifications. Hirap na masyado ang sitwasyon ng pilipinas, hindi mo n alam kung sino ang dapat paniwalaan. nasa sa iyo na iyon kung kaninong emosyon ka papakuha.

muddying the waters? or just simply saying the truth?
we, at our current position, can only assume to what really is happening.....
sen. lacson is hell-bent on overthrowing the government....
GMA is unquestionably corrupt....
whom should we belive?
well we can never truly say....
should we trust the sly fox or the rabid wolf?
well it is simple.... the power that we grant these people are corrupting them and thus we should take it from them and give it to a more responsible person....
so what if lozada is a big fat liar... at least he is giving the masses hope for the removal of our "just" president....

gud_pm sir!!! :)

First of all, i do agree that politics in our country is really not for the faint of heart… but I think even the one who contained the sturdiest heart could even get a heart attack at once, when exposed with our politics. . .

I admired Senator Lacson’s tactfulness when it comes to scrutinizing the issues of the day (especially when those are involving controversies about the first family). I admired (sometimes entertained and intrigued on) Senator Madrigal’s way of smartly questioning the witnesses and resource persons.

These two senators could possibly be those persons behind the alleged “patriotic fund” and “grand design”, just what DENR Secretary Lito Atienza has said. They are the perfect choices—Lacson being the designer (for having a background as the former PNP Chief), and Madrigal being the financial provider (for she is rich). And what a perfect choice of characters!

But I humbly think, the secretary was just throwing things against the two great senators just to divert the attention from the heated revelations of the credible Jun Lozada. Being the most vocal and resourceful oppositions, the secretary is giving the impression to the public that the senators should be perceived as the directors of the “Jun Lozada show”, and that everything that Mr. Lozada has said was being scripted by the two. In short, he was indirectly making Jun Lozada a liar.

It’s a pity for the secretary to be trapped to lies, and discredit the senators, whom I think are more experienced when it comes to dissecting evidences.

And what is P20M compared to a US130M? As what Jun Lozada said: bribery and corruptions are just normal in the government. What is abnormal is the amount of bribery and corruption.

And that P20M is just the compensation for telling the truth. That P20M-perceived-bribe by other people is just the price for knowing everything anomalous and disgusting already happening in the country.

That P20M may not be enough… and may not even save dignity and life.

i just hope and pray that Secretary Neri will come out soon! and tell the truth!. . .

well, its seems our probinsyanong intsik soon to be a hero is on the verge of questions with regards to his credibility as a witness. thats not surprising! its always that those who loves to be right is the one whoturns out to be wrong.
you see, some say that jlo was a puppet of sen lacson to be infamous again to criticize the govt therefore he would again be recognized by the people for his
heroic deed. my point whether thats true or not still jlo tells the truth. so is that manipulated?

Haaay.. Masyado na talagang magulo na talaga ang sitwasyon ngayon sa gobyerno.. Nakakaawa din si Lozada dahil maliliit pa yung anak nya but he has to stand on what he knows..

Unti unti nading lumalabas yung mga tinatago ng mga pulitiko.. Haaay..

I'll just be praying for peace for all of them.. =(

I think that it would be hard for us to trust someone nowadays. It seems that everyone is doing what would benefit him the most. The question is,"What would Mr. Lozada get from testifying against the government?". Is these for all the Filipino? Or for the benefit of the few?

It would be illogical to assume that a mere twenty million pesos would be enough for a man to risk the life of his family...?

Let's not judge the book by it's cover..

Let's think...

Let's do what we think is right...

Do not lose hope...^^

i think jun lozada's testimony was the most controversial issue since last year...

i watched the hearing at the senate and it seems that sen lacson had already met j lo even before the trial happened... and come to think of this, what was that meeting for? what is it all about? and why does j lo seems or look comfortable whenever sen lacson was asking him?

and as i researched it,we can question j lo's credibility because he admitted that he was involved in corruption and so why do we believe in his testimonies? the question is what was his motive why he was doing that?is it because the life of his family was already in threat?

i think there's a reason behind all his testimonies and i think he was also prepared for whatever might other senators will ask him...

as i what i observed, many people are really clamoring for the ousting of PGMA and seekers for truth..
i saw different kinds of person, from the elite to the poor, from the professional to the unemployed..
i think those people from different point of views and backgrounds was made as "one"...

Everything happening in our country is like a soap opera that everyone is waiting for the end. the question is who will be the winner after this drama?who will bring the award winning trophy?
after lozada spoke of truth about this controversial ZTE deal. many things happen, there are many Filipino believed that he is telling the truth and it shows in survey. but not all of our countrymen sees him as a hero because of many allegations about his credibility. credibility to shows that there is corruption happening but he himself is corrupted one. but what the sayings says all of us is sinner.
and there is an issue about our dear ping lacson knows all about what is happening to our whistle blower, i smell something fishy. i hope that all of those investigations conducted by our senators is for the filipino and not for their own interest. i really hope so because whatever will happen to our country ,the real victim in this situation are the FILIPINO.

I too have been asking same questions, but I disregard it because I’m one of the people who want to know the truth. It seems to me that Filipinos today wanted someone who can lean their trust on, like what most of us believe and support Lozada. We support and believe him even though he hasn’t showed any evidence that might prove all his allegations. When I attended the forum at Ateneo Law School, I wanted to ask him what made him different among those other whistleblower who also had expose’ to top officials in our country? Well, I’ll update if I already ask this to him.

If this is true, there’s still no evidence that would support all this presumptions. Either way, all his saying is also an allegation but most Filipinos believe him. He’s having a tour like an international star on every university here in metro manila for what? To encourage young students to join him in ousting the incumbent president? Or for him to see how warm does he welcomed by others? I don’t know his agenda is, but whatever it is I getting tired of the NBN-ZTE issue. Lozada’s call for people power is too weak to make the president step down to her presidency. I am afraid that there will come a time that Lozada will be forgotten by some Filipinos, as well as, what he did in order for us to know the truth.

All I can say is that his crocodile eyes has been too much for me. If he wanted the truth to come out, then say it! You don’t have to cry. I hope he is aware that some politicians is using him for their own’s sake, I hope he could see that. I believe him, but there were instances of his statement that I disagree, it is being exaggerated. If he would run for any electoral office in any election date, I would assume that all the things he said are not liable.

as for me,..

lozada..is a paid conscience..

as what i see in this world,.
no one would go out to the public and unleash the secrets of the government..

it would be a suicide..

would you dare to risk your family's life by spreading the secrets of the administration without any reward or grant or assurance?

he might be credible..he might have the support of the mass..he might be proud..
he might possess all these things..coz he might be paid to be brave...

When I saw the article by Belinda, my first reaction was, "haynaku, Bel, the Rabid Anti-Gloria Crowd (RAGC) will pooh-pooh your writeup because YOU wrote it."

One of my peeves with this issue is the way prejudging has been prevalent. If you are anti-gloria, you are truth incarnate. If you are pro-gloria, or not "sufficiently" anti-gloria, you are either a paid hack from the Palace or is blind.

Issues are naturally divisive. Pero, sana naman, the arguments were based on the merits of the case. The way the ZTE expose has been going, even "anonymous" sources become gospel truth if they're anti-Gloria, and even video evidence is "suspect" if it doesn't show what the RAGC crowd want.

I saw a column where a psychologist described how the NAIA video of Lozada proves he was under duress. But, really, does it show anything for or against his being "manhandled"? Andami ngang additional details na supplied by the columnist that, in an ordinary situation, could be speculative. But since the columnist was anti-gloria, I'm sure totoo din sinasabi niya.

I'm actually disappointed with the Law Students right now. I want to ask them to apply the Rules on Evidence that they supposedly learn in class to the mountain of "evidence" in the Lozada expose and see what happens.

Galit lang lahat yan eh. I just wish people would stop, think and discern a little bit more.

Oo, galit ka ke Gloria, pero sapat bang rason yun para isangtabi ang katotohanan?

This issue reminds me of my COCC training in high school, wherein senior officers will have to play good cop or bad cop.
In this case a private meeting is like a scene from CSI, wherein the suspect is hammerred with questions that will eventually make him confess.
Mr. Lacson will forever be known as the opposition senator who is willing to go through hell to bring down the government.
