An Interesting Reflection: Slow Down Culture

This is an interesting piece by Eric the Swede entitled "Europe's Rising Slow Culture". I came across it while surfing the net.. It may be an old article some may have read it already but it still offers an interesting perspective in life....

It's been 18 years since I joined Volvo, a Swedish company. Working for them has proven to be an interesting experience. Any project here takes 2 years to be finalized, even if the idea is simple and brilliant. It's a rule.Globalized processes have caused in us (all over the world) a general sense of searching for immediate results. Therefore, we have come to possess a need to see immediate results.

This contrasts greatly with the slow movements of the Swedish. They, on the other hand, debate, debate, debate, hold x quantity of meetings and work with a slowdown scheme. At the end, this always yields better results.

Said in another words:

1. Sweden is about the size of San Pablo , a state in Brazil.
2. Sweden has 9 million inhabitants.
3. Stockholm has 500,000 people.
4. Volvo, Escania, Ericsson, Electrolux, Nokia are some of its owned companies.

Volvo supplies the NASA.The first time I was in Sweden , one of my colleagues picked me up at the hotel every morning. It was September, bit cold and snowy. We would arrive early at the company and he would park far away from the entrance (2000 employees drive their car to work). The first day, I didn't say anything, either on the second or third. One morning I asked, "Do you have a fixed parking space? I've noticed we park far from the entrance even when there are no other cars in the lot." To which he replied, "Since we're here early we'll have time to walk, and whoever gets in late will be late and need a place closer to the door, don't you think? Imagine my face.

Nowadays, there's a movement in Europe name Slow Food. This movement establishes that people should eat and drink slowly, with enough time to taste their food, spend time with the family, friends, without rushing. Slow Food! is against its counterpart: the spirit of Fast Food and what it stands for as a lifestyle.

Slow Food is the basis for a bigger movement called Slow Europe, as mentioned by Business Week.Basically, the movement questions the sense of "hurry" and "craziness" generated by globalization, fueled by the desire of "having in quantity" (life status) versus "having with quality", "life quality" or the "quality of being".

French people, even though they work 35 hours per week, are more productive than Americans or British. Germans have established 28.8 hour workweeks and have seen their productivity driven up by 20%. This slow attitude has brought forth the US 's attention, pupils of the fast and the "do it now!"This no-rush attitude doesn't represent doing less or having a lower productivity. It means working and doing things with greater quality, productivity, perfection, with attention to detail and less stress.

It means reestablishing family values, friends, free and leisure time. Taking the "now", present and concrete, versus the "global", undefined and anonymous. It means taking humans' essential values, the simplicity of living. It stands for a less coercive work environment, more happy, lighter and more productive where humans enjoy doing what they know best how to do. It's time to stop and think on how companies need to develop serious quality with no-rush that will increase productivity and the quality of products and services, without losing the essence of spirit.

In the movie, Scent of a Woman, there's a scene where Al Pacino asks a girl to dance and she replies, "I can't, my boyfriend will be here any minute now". To which Al responds, "A life is lived in an instant". Then they dance to a tango.

Many of us live our lives running behind time, but we only reach it when we die of a heart attack or in a car accident rushing to be on time. Others are so anxious of living the future that they forget to live the present, which is the only time that truly exists. We all have equal time throughout the world. No one has more or less. The difference lies in how each one of us does with our time.

We need to live each moment. As John Lennon said, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans".Congratulations for reading till the end of this message. There are many who will have stopped in the middle so as not to waste time in this globalized world.

luckily, im not one of those who stopped reading at the middle part of your post.
I enjoyed reading this post. After reading this stuff, it made me stop, think and realize that everything written here was absolutely right.
We are all given a definite time to live and it is up to us on how to plan in this span of time given to us.
"Hindi lahat ng bagay nadadala sa madalian"-a filipino belief that correlates with the essence of this post.
We should not blame anyone if we are experiencing hardships because it is the result of our own decisions.
We should learn to take time.

I cannot understand the first part of this post that's why I thought it's better to have a hard copy of this to have more time to comprehend. I almost quit reading it coz I really can't relate with the topic and I really am not interested to topics like that. Good for me, I didn't! It's really a very nice message...a matter of life and time. It's not the quantity of time that counts but the quality... Time passes by very fast and we don't have to rush things up just to go with the flow, moving fast won't make the time move slower. The more it moves faster, the more we should treasure and enjoy each moment!

What can i say... hmmm... the blog you posted is great!!!! It reminds me of something, something about the saying TIME IS GOLD!!! where time really is a gold... time is very essential and crucial to our life that's the reason why most of the people are throwing their lives away just to catch the time. Rushing is not the solution.. Time must used efficiently and wisely... We must cherish each moment we have.. cause lost time can never be back..

After reading this article I've remembered what I've noticed with most of the students. Usually they don't finish their requirements in an early time. They always cram on things due to the fact that they're worried with the coming of the deadline.

I learned that lesson already. Now I prefer doing works in an early time so that it won't be stressful and a bigger possibility that I finish it the way I wanted it. Another advantage is that it won't be a problem if other projects required to be passed.

As posted, "No one has more or less time". One should know how to use their time, so that you won't rush and have regrets afterwards.

In this fast paced world, its quite interesting sometimes to stop and take a look at the world around you differently and take things in a gradual motion where you will be having all the time that you want to contemplate and reflect in all of the things that you have already done as well as the things you are presently doing and taking care of in your life.

Perhaps, slowing down is technically one of the no-no's that man had alreadyavoided and considered to be long forgotten in his life now, since he had already developed and incurred technology which brought him a busier life, that required the need to rush and swiftly accomplish more and get things done in just a matter of short time; when all along, the goal was to help humans become comfortable and make things easier in thier lives.

The blog entry was very stirring when I read it a lot of times, until eventually I got the message it tries to pitch and convey to the reader. It tells us an important lesson that most of us had overlooked and missed intentionall, and even unintentionally through time. And maybe, it is one of the main reasons on why a lot of us are continuously sad, unsatisfied, unsuccessful, and full of regrets in the kind of life that we are living. We forgot to how to take things slow.

On the blog entry, I took everything that you said or referred to be slow as, valuing all the significant things and parts and of your of your life for you to be able to live it to the fullest. It means, people should learn how to carefully categorize the things or the parts of their life that would matter most until the eternity. Knowing this would exercise us to pick up and focus on the important things which are commonly simple, but greatly teaches us to live life completely.

The blog entry invoked me to take time and enjoy the present time of my life, instead of wondering much of what my future could be, because most of the things that matters most are here. Chasing after time is like chasing after the wind which is very worthless, because time has its proper event that happens in a designated order, this is almost the same as hurrying and rushing on most of the things in life that tends to throw it away,. Unlike slowing things down, which enables us to enjoy every moment in our life even if it is good or bad.

hi ser! gud day!

TIME IS GOLD!

yun lang po. salamat!

I've read your post (completely), and kinda like it.. You're absolutely right.. We don't need to rush things so that the quality, productivity and the spirit of the things we're doing comes in.

Unlike here in the Philippines, some people (or maybe majority of us) live always in a rush. Others have a saying "Kahit na Ano pa ang kalabasan!.. Basta matapos lang kagad.." or "Kelangan matapos kaagad yan, Kaya madaliin mo na!" tells that we sometimes forgot that we must consider the output or the outcome, if it will be good or not. In my own opinion, we now Filipinos live in stress and fast-paced nation because we are striving for the progress and the productivity.

I think it will be a good thing if we try to do the same practice as they do. Life is not a rush, we dont have only our work, we have also a family, friends, and ourselves. Quality time for each of it makes our life stress-free and happy. Thanks for the blog, it enlightens.

well..,, as many had said, time is gold. but even though, it doesnt mean that you need to be in a hurry doing as many things you can do in 1 day and ending up in a stressed and exhausted feeling. admit it guyz many of us like cramming. we are waiting for the deadline to come for us to finish the task. but we take for granted the important things in acomplishing the task, the quality.

they say that we now live in a fast pace generation. many invention had been created to make our life fast and easy. we study hard or work very hard for our future to be what we want it to be but we must remember that we need to have time to rest. "have a break, have a kitkat". spending quality time with our family, friends or collegues is one thing money cant buy.

so we must take our time. our teacher in high school once said that planning makes things close to perfect. you must know how to use your time wisely and efficiently. because if plan our task, we can give attention to the tasks producing greater quality.

about this blog, it is really an interesting article..it is true that we should use our time wisely.. we don't have to rush things just to say that we are early..sometimes, it is right to take our time in doing something for best results..

as of now, many things are all instant.. ginagawang madali na ang lahat.. un bang di na mahihirapan ang tao..at kung ibabase naten dito sa Pilipinas, halos lahat ng tao ay laging rush..yung halos gawin na lahat ng trabaho sa isang araw lang.. kya nman ung ibang gagawin ay nagiging palpak na o kaya naman ay hindi ganun kaganda..yung tipong may maipasa lang.. siguro nga sobrang na-inheret nating mga Pilipino ung kaugalian ng mga Espanyol na "BAHALA NA" system..which is hindi naman tama..

isa pang tumatak sa isip ko yung title ng article na "Europe's Rising Slow Culture".. kumbaga, mabagal na kultura pero patuloy na umuunlad.. which means they have just proven that they have quality not just in their products but also in their lives..

we don't have to rush everything in our life..there are some things that we must cherish..as other said, enjoy life! minsan lang natin mararanasan ang mga bagay na darating sa atin, sabi nga samantalahin na natin.. at para sa akin naman "kung may magagawa ka ngayon, gawin mo na".. kumbaga ibuhos mo na lahat ng makakaya mo para gawin ang isang bagay..satisfying ung feeling dahil makikita mo ung magandang kinalabasan ng ginawa mo.. dahil pinagtuunan mo ito ng oras.. hindi minadali lang..Live Life!

that's all i can say sir..

I enjoyed reading the article. I think that it is right especially now that globalization is taking place in our society. I suddenly remember the definition of globalization from one of our books. According to it, globalization is the increasingly free flow of ideas, goods, services, and technology at a speed unprecedented in efforts and outcomes. The people nowadays, are very particular with being so fast. I don’t say that it is wrong but somehow, there is this negative side of it. There are a lot of products, technologies, services and information that are capable of doing things at a fast rate. Right now, especially in the United States, they are usually in a hurry. But I don’t say that it is not good, because on the other hand it has also advantages especially in the business sector. But I think that there are some aspects in which we should not rush things. For example, in decision making, we should think about the problem a hundred times. In the government for example, some laws are not that efficient because it is made on rush. The legislators did not fully study the issue or the law to be passed. With regards to the “slow food”, I think that it is true. I have learned from my science teacher that in order to fully digest the food and get the nutrients from it, we should slowly eat our food.

When I was reading the article, I reminisce the times when I rush my projects. I do it a day before the deadline, and the result would be a total mess. Maybe, if I plan the things or think about what I will do with my project early, then I would be able to pass a project that is, I can say, I have done with my best. I realized that time is ample. It is just up to the person who is using it. Personally, I think that we should not rush things. We should make the best of our time. We should not cram over things. Some things are not meant to be done in rush.

i read your post and it made me think that your kinda right. We dont have to rush things, because it may lead to a terrible thing that can make us sad.We have a lot of time to do such things we just dont know hao to use them...we think that its ok to to the job 3-4days before the due date, but its not.

some filipinos believe in the saying "kung di makuha sa santong dasalan sa santong paspasan na lang idadaan" they believe that it is more easy when they rush things up,but they dont know that it may lead into a bad result...

this is why time is told to be gold...its a treasure that we must use wisely to make our life more easier.

Your post really helped a lot to those readers and bloggers like me.. It is said that we should value our time for we able to maintain the "quality" in our works..

Taking time to think for what and who we should prioritize is such a very important thing we have to accomplish.. And for me, we should give more time to the Lord not only with our job, family, friends and leisure.. Actually, we can give our whole time.. And that could be the healthiest life we may have.. The "Quality and a Slow Down Life Style".. Anyway sir, just wanted to share something.. It's not all about the politics and our temporal life we have here on earth we must apply this so-called Slow Down Culture the Swedish has.. Having healthy body, soul, and spirit is the complete, balance and most enjoyable life we could ever have.. God bless Sir. Have a nice day.. =)

While i'm reading the article, medyo napag-isip-isip po ako tlaga ng husto.

We always consider time as precious one. There is a quote that we treasure it like gold. but in relity not most of is relly value what we callid time. "What time is it?" we always ask it but the question is how we use our time.
Maybe at this time were eating our lunch, taking a nap, doing our homework or nothimg at all. I realize that we do different things at the same time but the truth is we have equal time. time that we use in order to finish our works. Some of us rush in order to finish our work not thinking what will be the result of it. After reading this I learned that things are best done the easy way. It's not the process or how you do things. It doesnt count how complicated you do things that others will think you're great. But it's the outcome of what we do that really matters.

Well, I had a great time reading your post. And I'm glad that I do not belong to those who will stop reading at the middle. I come to realize that what you have posted is true. Maybe, that's one of the reasons why we face many difficulties in life. Why? It's because we don't give enough time to every little thing that we have to do. It's either we rush doing it or we just don't really give much effort to it. I do believe that we have to give our best shot in every task that we do, because we don't know what might happen tomorrow. As the saying "time heals the wounds”, goes, I can also say that given time, we all have the chance to improve not only ourselves as well as our nation, our world. We should put in our minds that if we really want to be successful in life, we all have to work hard for it. Success doesn’t come with one snap; it comes with perseverance and dedication with what you do. People nowadays think that because we live in a globalized world, everything should be done quickly, but what sense does it make? Especially when you know deep within you that you could have done something greater than that. This is such a nice reflection; I hope everyone could read this. It could wake them up and motivate them to exert more effort than what they have used to.

"Slow Down Culture!!". Wow! it was one of those articles that really hit me and made me realized a lesson in our dynamic time.I've gone through reading when I've noticed I'm being like one of those characters who asked his friend about his parking lot!! -"Imagine my face!" Yeah that's right! I can't believe that in a fast, dynamic and changing world of ours, can there be a story like that on the other side of the world. For me before, slow down would just make your work incomplete, unsatisfying, irrelevance and worthless! I thought by being like that, you cannot cope up with the globalized world!! While on the other hand, fast attitude would lead you to your success! It's like a meal that you should take everyday for you to accomplish your task. But that was just a whole joke, which I thought was right after I've read this very relevant and inspiring reflection.

In my case I know I'm not alone. There are many out there who believes on the capability of modern technology and the power of fast changing time. Anyway who would have thought slow could dominate fast. Actually people are just being practical now a days, that they would take any chances just to make their life easier, make their work faster and make their condition more comfortable. In any of those cases being slow is out, being fast is better, that's what always registered in the mind of the peole. But come to think of it, that this "slow down culture" can perhaps a better solution towards the "quality of life" we are looking for. I absolutely agree that spending life with your family, friends and doing worthwhile things without being in a rush and in a hurry can make each of that moment satisfying. Behind those competition and as what the article said about the craziness generated by globalization, we still need to live each moment.

This has been a very intersting reflection that everyone should read about. Its a very important article where you can get a lot of reason to slow down and live life while enjoying it. There's a good lesson that can be learned after one has read this piece. We are now in a modern world and everything happens with just a snap. Even people surfing the net may not give their time to read a short message for their own sake, especially if they are in a hurry. As what Al Pacino responds to the girl "A life is lived in an instant" and we should not live it with a haste, in a hurry or in a rush mode. Since life is short, we just need to know how to spend and how to use it correctly and wisely. Enjoy present coz its really the real time. Forget our past because we can never go back through time, and don't think too much of our future coz its still ahead of us. I think that's what the article would also wants us to think and realized, to reflect on the value of time, using it in a fast changing world and making it our key to success.

Today almost everything is fast/instant.The technology which can help us make things easier and faster.Regarding the food we eat especially when we are busy doing smething what we do is to buy instant food in the store and put hot water in it then that's it or sometimes we just take our order in a fast food chain. Those things makes us lazy. Not all the time we shoud be in a hurry doing things as fast as we can without knowing what must be the result. About what you have posted.it's true that sometimes we need not be in a hurry. We should enjoy every single moment of our life together with our family. It's better to have time with one another. We can relate it also in making decision,as they said "we should think seven times" before we finalized what we should do for us to make a right decision.

Hi Sir!

It's discipline.

I agree rin na time is very important. Kung may opportunity, give your best. Live your life to the fullest. Every second is very important.

I think, we just have to live on the present and no matter what happen in the future, it's because that's what we want. Sabi nga rin ng kaklase namin na "Everything happens for a reason."

whoa.
i remember what i have read about africa's slow down culture too, that lead them also to a "success"-they say.
when i read that post of my friend in her blog, i was so amazed that africa does it, and now, europe too. and that perspective in living,is awesome. Who can/may think that we should TAKE TIME in things while many of us says that "bilisan naten, para madameng tayong matapos".
well, taking time in things is a good way to finish things without doubts. if we take things ng mabilisan lang, in the end, we will not be satisfied on what we've done. And rushing up things will lead to great mess.

in the Philippines, if we cope this kind of perspective, ahm, maybe, just maybe, there would occur changes- changes in lifestyle, changes in government, etc.. etc.. and i think, this changes would be GOOD. but, many of the filipinos nowadays, hindi sila ganon mag-isip - mas ok pa sa knila na magmadali, mgmadali...

its just a matter of slowing down and hurrying up.

heheh, it really sounds strange about the slow food, I wonder how much Fast Food had to be consumed before the wisdom of Slow Food was discovered. heheh..

but all in all.,
we should be keen in all we're doing. its like, one step at a time.. one step at a time for a great finish...

Since I've entered college I've been always in a hurry, and I'm always worried about what the future holds. Because I always thought that college is just the first step to the real world. That maybe if I do things fast enough and get done with them right away, I still have time to do other things and what I want to do. But what I've noticed is in the end of every task I'm done, I'm still not satisfied. Maybe because I'm always in a hurry doing it.
This kind of reflection really strikes me."Quantity versus Quality", two important thing, there's no doubt about it.
Though I'm really fond of europeans lifestyle, especially the influence of the old lifestyle (maybe the victorian era)I never thought that they have this kind of slow down culture.
But anyway, this kind of lifestyle (if ever will be implemented), could help the people all over the world to realize the value of time and the "quality of being".
Many would criticize this kind of lifestyle, but maybe they could also agree to it's message, that not everything could be put into hurry, for the sake of being more productive and satisfied to their work.
While typing this comment I've remembered the movie "Cast Away", and Tom Hanks as the lead actor. In the movie, Tom was one of the busiest person in his field because his working for Fedex as an executive. And for him punctuality must be on the top of everything.
I've remembered, that while he was trapped in the island (for four years?), he had lost his love(or fiancee). Thought that he was dead, she married another guy.
And when he was finally found by a ship in the middle of the ocean, he thought that now he's back he can marry her. But as he realize he could not turn back the time and the moments lost to them.
(Wala lang sir naalala ko lang 'yun, since we're talking about time and quality, I first thought of punctuality, then that movie)

Hmm. Quite interesting, Slowfood was the counterpart of fastfood.

Quoted, "we believe that everyone has a fundamental right to pleasure and consequently the responsibility to protect the heritage of food, tradition and culture that make this pleasure possible." - philosopy of slowfood.

Simpleng philosopia ng mga taga sweden but has a great impact to us, it just shows that we don't have to make a hurry out of things. If we just try to think for the best solution we can have to our problems, maybe we can have a much "better place" than what sweden has.

And besides, mas gugustuhin ko pang maranasan ang unti-unting pag-angat, in this view, i can say na may worth din yung paghihirap that we have suffered.

At first I thought it was just an ordinary blog, a waste of time, but i was absolutely wrong...
What I can say is, it is matter of critical thinking..don't take the risk..

it is a matter of considering all the consequences that may overcome in a particular task. RUSH is not the answer, good outcome never comes out if there's in a hurry. time space is need or we just simply say a "preparation".

Most of the people in this world wants a "RUSH", when you're young, you want to get old fast, and when you're old, you don't want to waste your time.

One I realized is neverdo or look things in just "blink of an eye". when we have great perception, time preparation and wisely using it great outcome will be inevitable.

these statement contrast with:
"It depends upon the situation..."
(maybe you get what I want to impose)

"slowly but surely..." I think is the appropriate phrase for this1 doing things with all your heart can brought a good perception on doing certain jobs, at the same time it will start your day at the best...

The best way to avoid cramming is making a PLAN. Plan plays a vital role in our everyday life, so as it gives a better routine to avoid RUSH..

I have a great time reading this blog..nice one..!

Take it slowly and surely. No need to be hurry, enjoy every minute that you spend.
For me it's the main thought of the blog. It reminds us that everything in life can be take easily.
After I read this, I said to my self, "Naku lesson ito para sa 'kin, most of the time kasi, palagi akong nagmamadali sa lahat ng bagay na ginagawa ko, kahit na 'di talaga kailangang magmadali".

I also realized that to have a perfect decision or move, think not once, not twice, but seven times before I finalized it.

The message is great, it's simple but meaningful.

I read this blog 3 times, kasi ang ganda ng content...
This message will help me to face the fast pace of today's world!!!

enjoying life is a matter of how you spend it...

Mostly i see people spending their life in such a hurry, like there's never gonna be tomorrow. Spending each time working and working to earn what they want or should i say what they need.

though, others spend it in a way of really enjoying it. They might not achieve too much accomplishment in means of quantity but has prefer to make things in its best outcome. Sometimes ignoring the time... I hate to admit it but sometimes i just like spending time enjoying my work, maybe sometimes enjoying it to much that i forgot to do things that are to be prioritized.

NOt everything should be done in a hurry... but you also have to value each time knowing what is to be prioritized. Sometimes we need time to see how wonderful it is to see everything works in place though never forget what things are to be done...

this blog reminded me that every second of our life to to be spend wisely...not in to much hurry but not in a way of losing each valuable minute...

it's true for everyone we really are the one's in this article, for we always take things in a hurry and we thought that it will yield better results, but unfortunately we are the one who disappointed ourselves cause we all know taht things that were done hurrily can never have good results.

all i need to say is that we should always remember that there's time for everything.all we need to know is how we should take care of it..and also don't be in a hurry..

at first, I was captured the title, I'm confused what is this all anout. But after reading, I was stunned.
Definitely because, the message was good for me as student for now.
That we don't live our lives in a hurry. Like that "SLOW FOOD" or "SLOW EUROPE" things.
And that, we must accept the fact, that we have to live life to the fullest.

Technology is not the one to be blame its us... because we do a lot of things that makes our lives worse not better... Living our lives is easy, it's us which makes our life worse... they said that time is gold so they do a lot of things, that's why all are in a hurry... they are the ones who doesn't know how to use their time wisely... I mean they cram more and more activities in their tight schedules, is that how we value time... Life is How to do Less in it by focusing on what is important... This is a bible passage that I can share to all the readers of this article...

There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven... So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?

Wow! This is so interesting. I couldn’t imagine how some parts of the Europe do that in a slow manner. You know every work is pressurized by time and so how could that be, they were so stable. Even for me I sometimes do my job slowly like eating and some say I move slowly. From this piece, they were a little bit right, why can’t we do our job slowly, you know being sluggish is not always negative, it even increase productivity and the quality of products and services. We just think of how time is relay important or valuable as they say “time is gold”. I believe that no-rush attitude is a way for lasting life. We’re born here for reestablishing family values, friends, free, and leisure time. Also, it says that being early should give a parking lot for the late employees. For me, this is not a good policy cause the employees might get lazy of entering the company. But on the other hand, I can say that the author has a point for he wants to give way to the late employees. Searching for immediate results is the best way for us but for them it’s not. I can say that being sluggish of finalizing a project is not effective. I have experienced of doing projects on time and it turned out more efficient and more time for my leisure. You know this piece is quite confusing. I think those people without a great care of doing their jobs are the ones responsible for this. I just think so cause we, here in the world, have our own way on how we could handle things.

Wow, i'ved enjoy reading your blog about "Slow Down culture" sir, it was so fascinating showing a type of culture that is probably sounds new to asian people(esp. filipino's like us), it make us reflect on how people on the other side of the world live literary slow, but is sure, meaning productive, valuable and less tress enough to make life not so miserable...

The first part shows how evolving countries do works on a "nice, slow but sure basis" that i think is an ideal model for other countries, eventhough they work years for just a simple thing, they themselves make sure that it will have a great outcome, a brilliant fruit on their works...on the other hand, it's an unusual thing for most of us who think that "time is gold" and admit that we sometimes rush things for an immediate product but the outcome is far from our expectations...which is not good..we should spare enough time on doing things...and see a great results afterwards...

On the second part, i may say it is a bad deduction because people prioritize late people, give a "special treatment"and space for them to not become late even if they're late, and those early bird sacrifices to walk far just because they have enough time to walk, which is not a pleasant thing...

About the "slow food" thing, yes it's true that fast food is our lifestyle, but come to think of it, we should enjoy eating because it gives way for us to chat with friends and family and spend quality time with them, of course we should eat fast if we do'nt have enough time, our stomach would never be full if we practice "rush eating"....

well it is right that we should not rush things and losing the value of it afterwards...we should always take time on doing things, not losing the essence of time but the assurance of having a nice and productable outcome on it....(",)/"

but if the thing that we're waiting is worth waiting for.. we will never know that you waited for that thing for so long..

taking time to think makes us realize and learn more things..
quantity is the second thing we must consider,, but first, the quality of what we're doing..
we must not take life in a hurry..

It is very surprising that one of the leading countries in terms of productivity and success have been doing things in a slow manner.

Most of us offcourse look forward to get things done as soon as possible, but what this article tells us, I realized that doing things in a slow manner together with assuring its quality and enjoying your time could really make you produce a most satisfying product or doing what you want being fully satisfied which is a very great feeling.

I've really enjoyed reading this article. I'm really surprised that they are like that yet they are better than several countries in the world, than us. Why not do all the things we want, face all our hardships with confidence of overcoming it, and enjoy our life to it's fullest having less stress instead of hurrying to achieve what we want.

Actually, I didn’t' expect reading a repost in this blog. But I do appreciate sir’s effort for relaying us a piece of thought ‘bout Slow Down Culture and I do have something to say on that. Meanwhile, I understand that our professor might really have a busy schedule for a new ‘personal post.

I really like the article, it’s informative yet entertaining. Entertaining in the sense that the way the author presents his ideas was creative. Like for example his experience on the parking space, the fast food thing, his movie analogy and the parting lines. It is informative because he manages to give us a reality with set samples and data.

Goin’ to my comment proper, We Filipinos really had a say in this on hand since in this fast paced world of globalization, we are in need to go with e flow and trend in order for us not to be left out. But in the case of the Filipino Fast Foods, There is ‘Jollibee’. We are able to at least give our own version of their culture yet preserving the very root of our value-of being family oriented. A good example of how global norms or practices are interpreted differently according to local tradition; the universal must take particular forms. That is called ‘glocalization’ in http://www.sociology.emory.edu/globalization/issues01.html.

On the aspect of doin’ immediately versus having it taking some of your time. I remember this seminar which I attended just yesterday which is about e-Productivity with our speaker Erick Mack (sorry if I misspelled the name). In one of his slides I remember him discussing the thing that is EFFICIENT versus EFFECTIVE. And I quote, “being ‘efficient’ is doing things right while being ‘effective’ is doing the right thing. Another is his presentation with regards to those URGENT actions and IMPORTANT ones. These things might help us in deciding on how we should look up into life and in our end desires. For I know, sometimes, no, matter how fast things go ‘round us. It is nice that we are able to give sometimes for ourselves.

Lastly, sir, the comment page is quite dull. I suggest that you create a link for a more visually presented page so that we might not get bored in reading others opinion. It would also help you in checking our remarks. The font size is sort of large and for the ones who gave thorough commentaries would make the page loaded. Another is, and this is really the last one. I prefer that there would be a discussion on blogging since I noticed other bloggers were anonymous and weren’t able to give their identity. Saying naman.

After reading this comment.. I'm surprised that there is a "slow culture" in this world.. Maybe it's not that usual to hear the word "slow" because of what we used to: " a fast pace of living". But it tells us about the appreciation of things that we have. I agree about the "quality time" thing. Doing this not in a hurry will make things work better than usual. I admire having the idea that establishing this movement: "Slow Culture" especially when they are with their families.

For me, this message will open the minds of people that appreciation to simple things in this world is vital for us to live happier. Life is all about taking risks and contentment as we have all know. We should live “today” different from “yesterday”. It’s not about the time that you woke up but the difference of happiness you live each day. Contentment in everything is very hard to find but being blissful for day after day that comes to us is the contentment we search for everyday. Plans are always there but it can never replace a “happy today”. Yes. God gave us equal time to live in this world. And that time already depends on how we will make use of it each day. Just be thankful, appreciate little things, live life to the fullest and so as God wants our life to be fruitful one.

and i suddenly realize that hindi nman pagnamatay ako bibilangin kong ilang ung nagawa kong bagay but instead how i spent my mortal life. and in the end they will not judge you according to how many things you have accomplished but how you accomplished things.

For me, the author wants to articulate everything about “time” and its significance in a different way. As what many say, “Time is Gold”. That is why, many thought that things must be done hastily, for us to finish the other things that we need to do. But in this blog, the adage “Time is Gold” is applied in a different way. How? It is because, time is used for thinking to succumb better results. As what was said in the blog, that in Europe, any project, even how big or how simple the project is, it takes time to think and decide, and at the end, they always yield good results. It is not a big deal if a person finishes a job in a short period of time because the results may be not that good.

A thing can be valued more if it comes solemnly into our lives. Just like the food we eat. In the blog, we can allude to the words “slow food movement”. It was established for the reason that when you eat a certain food quickly, you cannot appreciate the good taste of the food. Different, when eating it leisurely, you can have time to tang the food even in drinks and can lead your tongue to the positive reception of the food you are eating.

We cannot appreciate life if we are always in urgency. It’s because life is short. So accomplish all things by way of enough time to think, consider, study, scrutinize, grasp, etc. By this, we can constantly yield better outcome.

Having the quality at its best is one of the objective of every business here I the Philippines, I suppose so. As the way I understand this, time, for me, is also one factor and a great investment to have an eminent quality.
Volvo, for all I know, is one of the most expensive cars in the world and produced by the country that’s known for its quality work. That’s why every time I saw Volvo car here in the Philippines I automatically stop for awhile and watch amazingly the glamorous car in front or I have seen. The technology and research, which needed a lot of time and effort, put into Volvo has been carefully studied and experimented in order for them to produce such product. This concept should apply here also in the Philippines. The process is slow in progress yet they generate quality product.
As stated here, fast-food restaurants also produce good quality in a short period of time. In this modern age, you’re not going elsewhere if you’re slow. You’ll be left behind. We’re going on a faster level, which distinguish the concept of long period of time yet manufacture quality. Fast-foods already made a formula or a standard that makes it convenient for them to cook, the ready-made ingredients. That’s why it’s fast. It’s also fast because people nowadays are always in a hurry, always runs out of time. Everything in this world goes very fast today, because we thought this would be efficient and we can make time worthy.
Whatever path you choose, whether you take the slow-quality road or fast-quality road, I guess its how your perception in life goes. Live your life as you want it to be just being sure that the results would be the best for you and for others.

sir,
i'm not sure if these is the blog you want us to leave our comments, but i'll comment anyway..

I like the blog.. It's worth reading for.. It made me stop and realize something deep within myself.. In these world where more and more of globalization can be seen, people tend to forget about time, it's value.

I remember these line from my brother's essay,"The past is different from today but the present determines your future and you are the one who makes your present." Time indeed is a gold, when you drop it, you can never get it back, because it is of hugh value. We only live in these world for how many years? 50? 60? 80? Just think about it, have we done something out of our best?

My father used to tell me not to rush things, especially decision-making. He said I should think not twice but ten times of what I would do. The time is always with me. The consequences of any wrong decision I make may worth a life time of suffering, if not many years.I really do not pay much attention in what my father had said, thinking that I can make right decision without even thinking.. Well, I guess I am wrong.. Many instances in my life have proven that..

Quality is better than quantity.

Learn how to value time.

Learn how to take time.

In view of what I've read, let me share to you something that a friend told me...

Due to the increasing strength of China in terms of economics and resources, they now envision a world that will be dominated by their race. And to achieve this they are planning to produce intellectuals by altering China's educational system. They plan to scrap the teaching of nursery rhymes to primary students and instead introduce a cyber-based education composed of computer applications that will introduce the idea of trade to the minds of the young Chinese populace. One application for example is a role playing game wherein the child acts as the owner of a pasture and should be able to think of ways on how he'll be able to increase his profit.
This program is currently on trial and there are about 11 children subjected to this learning environment.

In this globalized world wherein the fastest prevails, I think we are also beginning to be "dehumanized". Everything seems to be in a hurry. In China, they plan on robbing the children a chance to experience their childhood by already injecting ideas of the adult world. It seems that they want the growth of their children to be in a hurry! They do not realize that from these nursery rhymes can be found simple rules and truths that every man should know.
Even adults always seems to be concerned with time that they begin to acquire a robot-like attitude towards work and eventually towards the people around them.
With these actions we are gradually being stripped of activities that are necessary for personal growth that cannot be found in the workplace. We are always in a hurry to do things that sometimes we begin to neglect quality time for ourselves and our family.
The article "slow-paced culture" illustrates a real environment that was able to let people be people and machines be machines. It gives us a picture of a conducive environment for working where people takes time to perform a task without jeopardizing the quality of the end product.
The article represents an antithesis to our machine-like life that is continually becoming a trend and sends a message to anyone who reads it: Success is not achieved in a hurry.
Even sprinters take their time in turning the roads, mindful of their bodily condition, conserving their energy for far harder laps with still the goal in mind.

i got this part of eminem's song "lose yourself" because the very essence of the song, i guess, is the same with this post, why you'd ask? it is because of the fact that time never repeats its self once its gone. we must savor every moment given to us because if we take time on fast pace, we can never experience LIFE.

Education is not such a thing that we can measure through using numbers and of course through the amount of money that we spent for the sake of our educational needs. Our attainments in life doesn't show the reality of our hardships for the reasons that we study in private institutions, instead we can prove our success by showing the application of these golden lessons that we've not on the objective aspect but by acknowledging the true reason of life. We are studying not for the reason that we have lots of money to spend neither we can DISCRIMINATE this public institutions where they do believe that this institutions is just a "nest of losers and impertinents!!"

But then we do not know that that these discriminated schools and universities are the one that can give our country a best honor and competitive students that we've ever know. So, why should we have to say that it is much better if we are going to privatized this public institutions? How about those students who cannot afford to pay this exaggerated tuition fees that they were asking from us.. THE STUDENTS???

As a political science student, i am weighing this situation not for the reason and sake of this elites.. but i am just thinking the sake of the people that occupy the great capacity of poor individual and i admit that i am belong to them.

Government was establish for us to govern and to give everything that was best for us as their people. we are not here top look for their mistakes but we are here to guide and help them to build such society that we want to. So i do believe that we have still a government and leaders who are willing to serve and save us from the imperishable poverty that we are facing now..

I don't know how to say my emptiness inside of me for seeing myself being abandoned for thinking the terrific situation of privatization and to ignore the power of cooperation and love between individuals..we still have ample time for searching our hopes and determination for success. Our government still have heart to give and subsidized all the things that we need to survive.. we still have hope.
